Society
The new infrastructure will have an effect on society now and in the future. Studies will be undertaken into the effect this will have on business, leisure activities, tourism and housing. Any effect on the cultural heritage will also be investigated.

New possibilities for people

print
A fixed link between Denmark and Germany may result in major changes for the local populations, bringing both advantages and disadvantages. Many other groups in society will also be affected. This will apply both while the bridge or tunnel is under construction and when it opens to traffic. The impact on people and society is therefore included as a part of the EIA study.

Before construction starts, the areas north and south of the Fehmarnbelt that may be directly affected by the fixed link will be mapped. This will include a careful study of the people who will be affected by the project. Among other things, the study will identify land used for agriculture or for leisure purposes, such as summer homes and tourist centres, or other important business interests.

It will also be investigated whether changes in traffic will exert any significant effect on social and business groups, e.g. within the tourist industry. If this is the case, more detailed mapping will be carried out.

Potential for development
There is a well-developed tourist industry on Fehmarn, and on Lolland there are energy projects that are in full development. Studies will illuminate new options and possible limitations imposed by a fixed link in these areas. A bridge or tunnel should provide better access to new markets and tourist destinations, and will mean changes to commerce and outdoor pursuits.

New traffic patterns alter noise levels and appearance
Traffic will produce new noise levels along the new road and rail link. The visual effects will also change, with ramps and a toll station on land, and a bridge across the sea, if the bridge option is selected. On the other hand, the old access roads to the harbours in Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn will become quieter yet.

Information for residents

During the construction phase, nearby areas will be brought into use and a large work force will be engaged in construction activities. This will increase traffic in these construction areas. Although efforts will be made to limit disruption as much as possible, noise, dust, and traffic rerouting are inevitable.

During construction, Femern A/S will inform both our neighbours and users of these areas of the significance that the link will have on them and their surroundings.
